Its rank em week: Anime Conventions (day 2)

Disclaimer: These are merely opinions based on my experiences and my expectations for a con.

Coming in as the 2nd least favorite con I have gone to is Megacon. But don't let its ranking fool you. Its down here only because relatively, every other con I went to was better. Whereas Metrocon dug its own grave, Megacon did what it needed to to not fail.

The trip to Megacon was not nearly as bad as Metrocon, since at the time I resided in Jacksonville. I drove down with some friends who weren't exactly mapquest savvy and we ended up taking an extra half hour trying to retrace our steps after we got lost.

The hotel was not too shabby either. I left reservations in the hands of someone I roomed with. We ended with 5 to a room. I volunteered to sleep in the bathtub and let the other 4 share the bed however they wanted. It was a half mile walk to the convention center. But once again, that was no biggie either. They did NOT serve a continental breakfast but I had brought all my own food so I was fine in that aspect.

Megacon was not very impressive but it did have some interesting things to do.

First off, there was the robot battles. Basically two people brought in pre-built robots that fought in a pit till there was a victor. It was rather enjoyable to watch two bots beat the crap out of each other.

And then there was a group there called Way of the Sword, a LARP in Florida and based on European/Japanese medieval history. They were holding a fight pit, giving people an opportunity to beat each senseless *to a point of course* and gain a preview of what it was like to fight for WotS. At the time I was an active participant in many of their events and this one, though I did not fight, did see my support for them as I watch the few interesting battles that happened.

Way of the Sword
This represented the final battle I fought with them, both on the field and off the field. But that is a story for another time.

And I got to dress in lolita. Yea sure, it does not seem that big a deal. But back then, dressing up was a rare occasion for me and I took the opportunities that were presented to me. Lolita aside though I did also get to cosplay as American Mcgee's Alice

And as Pocahontas

I'm on the far right :3

Unfortunately at the time, I was still a con Amateur. And knowing what I know now, I would probably enjoy it much more if I went back. But it has been 3 years since I have gone and it will probably be significantly longer before I am able to go to another Megacon.

  1. I went a couple of years ago, but I honestly barely remember anything about it. :O Admittedly, I was only able to go on Saturday, but that's usually the most eventful day! :O

Regardless, I'm still hoping that I'll be able to go this year. It's been several months since I've been able to go to a con. D:

    1. Hmmmm. Now that you mention this, it sprung a memory in my mind. We were trying to meet at Megacon back in 2010 :P

But we were unable to contact each other and unfortunately never ran into each other.
